Welcome to our blog series where we introduce you to our wonderful Fireflies teachers! We asked Miss Crystal, who teaches our Thursday classes, about her dance journey. Read on below to find out more...

When did you start dancing?
I began dancing at the age of seven. My headmaster noticed my boundless energy and suggested to my family that I should take up dance. From that moment, I couldn't stop moving and expressing myself through movement.
Where did you train and what was it like?
I received my training in both Hong Kong and the UK. I attended a vocational ballet school where I had the incredible opportunity to perform annually in various dance genres, including ballet, tap, jazz, contemporary, and musical theatre. This diverse training not only honed my technical skills but also enriched my understanding of different dance forms and their expressive qualities.
What are your favourite things about teaching dance?
My favourite aspect of teaching dance is witnessing my students grow both as individuals and dancers. Being their mentor and guiding them towards their full potential is incredibly rewarding. I find immense joy in supporting them through challenges and celebrating their achievements, especially when I see their smiles light up as they reach their goals.
What advice would you give to someone wanting to pursue a career in the dance industry?
Pursuing a career in the dance industry is challenging, and there will be times when you doubt yourself or feel conflicted. It's crucial to stay true to who you are and never compromise your individuality. When you feel like giving up, take a moment to reflect on how far you've come and remind yourself of your passion for dance.
Prioritise your health - it's the foundation of your ability to dance. Nourish your body, mind, and soul with care. Remember, there is only one you, and no one can replicate your unique essence. Embrace it fully! A quote I live by is, “Hard work beats talent when talent stops working."
What is your favourite dance show?
My favourite dance movie has to be Step Up because it beautifully showcases a variety of dance styles and emphasises that regardless of the genre, culture or race, we can all come together through the art of dance. The way it celebrates diversity in movement resonates deeply with me.
